You can hear Tyrone before you see him.

The sound of green coconuts being cracked with a worn machete. He swings the blade high overhead, crafting a perfect lid on the coco to reveal white flesh and the best ‘wata’ you ever tasted. Every week, Tyrone delivers hundreds of pipas (young coconuts) to businesses and homes across Puerto Viejo.

Cocos are in abundance as they offer many uses, including oil, milk, yogurt or vegan ceviche made from the flesh of the green cocos. Tyrone wastes nothing in his process. Using a machine, he shreds coconut husks leftover from a harvest to be use as an all-natural fertilizer for gardening.

“Ever since I was a kid, I would go to the docks in Limon and sell coco’s to visitors on the cruise ships.

And I grew up using coconut for my favorite dish: rondon. A local soup made with fresh fish, crab, lobster, and, of course, a rich coconut milk base.”

When Tyrone cruises up to my house for a weekly delivery, he is blasting reggae from his open windows with coconuts piled high in the back of the truck. His style is immaculate, red Jordan’s and clean braids tied into space buns. His smile, brighter than the Caribe sun. You would never know he just came from Black Beach shucking coconuts by the dozen in the heat of the day. Many know him as Mr. Coconut selling pipas frias at Chino Beach, at concerts and community gatherings.

Bir first, he is a father, husband, and grand-father, gushing over his kids and their busy lives. “Growing up too fast,” he says. When he’s not with the kids or keeping us all hydrated, Tyrone can be found creating projects for the youth of Puerto.

With the help of volunteers, he built the Children’s Magic Park in Chino Beach, a playground crafted from love as a space for kids to do what they do best.

The park is not just for play. It is to make friends, to socialize, and work together no matter what you look like or where you come from.

His mantra is: “Show respect, work hard, be humble.”

Each Christmas, he has a raffle to raise funds for a community party that provides children with gifts, beautiful food, face painting, music, and a connection to their neighbors. One thing is for sure, Tyrone always brings the vibes.

His big heart and desire to support the community stems from a story of loss. He was by his father’s side when he passed away at just 33 years old, Tyrone was only 9. Losing him at a young age made him grow up fast with the noticeable absence of a father figure. He never wants a child to feel that. It is why he makes space for celebration and joy, even if just for an afternoon.

Tyrone has big dreams. He plans to work with the mayor of Talamanca to create a large, interactive jungle gym with stationary bikes and weights for all ages to enjoy in Puerto. “Black, White, Chinese, Indian, we want to see everyone from any part of the world connecting.” ψ

“Mr. Coconut”

Tyrone Johnson
